Where did 'ORANGE' go?
AR/VR Experience on the loss of colors from nature due to Climate Change.
Environmental Issues:
1. Northern Lights would become colorless within a few decades due to global warming
2. The Fall foliage would lose its colors due to Climate change
3. The population of polar bears has decreased tremendously due to the melting of icecaps
4. The California wildfires claimed over 87 lives, 500 missing
5. Global Warming might lead 25% of the planet in permanent drought
A very sad fact came out of all this research: LOSS OF COLORS.
FOCUS:
As mentioned earlier, it is very likely that the northern lights would become colourless very soon due to global warming. The fall foliage would lose its colours. We won’t be able to see the vibrant shades of red and orange during fall.
Since these are effects that would take place slowly and within a few decades, it’s important that people become aware of these slow changes taking place around them. Else, seeing the fall devoid of the colours that make them ‘fall’ and visiting Alaska only to find colourless auroras could be quite shocking and depressing.
It’s important that we understand the reasons behind these change and work upon them before its too late.
The Fall foliage will lose its vibrant colors due to global warming
This year was my first fall! I was so excited and waiting to see all the fall colours. But the nature had other plans! The fall this year was very short and New York didn’t witness a lot of fall colours. The leaves turned yellow and then fell off.
If global warming results in warmer and hotter fall temperatures, either during daytime or during the night, this would tend to delay fall colours to later in the season, eventually leading to less of the fall colours.
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
1. How important are colors in our lives?
2. What colors do people associate with fall?
3. Would you be okay to live in a world devoid of the colors of nature, devoid of it's scenic beauty?
I am working on this project to trigger an emotion, to set a propaganda, to understand the importance of colors in people’s lives.
STORYBOARD:
The story board is about a girl who loves the nature, the fall colours. She loves watching the sunset. 25 years later when she brings her daughter to the same places she used to love visiting as a kid, she finds that everything has changed!
The fall colours are lost somewhere. The orange colour from the sunset is missing. It’s a story that talks about the loss of colours from the nature as time passes by.
AIM:
AR/VR experience on the loss of colors from the nature.
I also wish to make a documentary covering these changes in the future, have been working on the trailer for the same.
TRAILER :
VR EXPERIENCE
PROTOTYPE I:
The 1st prototype included three scenes in one terrain. The first scene had all the fall colors, representing the scenic beauty of nature.
As the user moved towards the second and the third scenes, the fall colours disappear
with the last scene being devoid of colours and leaves.
PROTOTYPE II:
I decided to put the scenes in concentric circles and start the experience from the centre of the experience, so that no matter in which direction the user went while exploring the experience, they would get to see the difference and the shift in the three scenarios.
PROTOTYPE III:
I added 'fireflies' in the form of particle systems to give a direction to the entire experience.
For the third prototype and user test, I reversed the order of the experience. The user starts from the barren land, the outermost concentric circle which has trees with no leaves.
All the particles highlighted with the orange box, depict the fall colours and are visible from the starting point of the user. The user has an option to either follow those particles, move towards the region with the fall colours or just explore where they are.
FINAL PROTOTYPE:
Well, the third prototype met my expectations. The users noticed the difference in the three scenes and explored all the three scenarios. But I still feel starting from the present & moving to the future would be more effective.
To add more depth and direction to the experience, I added some floating text as guiding questions and thoughts that I want the user to be thinking about while exploring the experience.

FUTURE WORK:
VR: I wish to make the experience more interactive. I am working on changing the background colours with the movement of the user.
AR: Build the scene for AR application on mobile phones, making the experience more interactive.
My goal is to trigger a sense of loss through this journey from the innermost, vibrant circle to the outermost, barren and colourless circle of experience, which the current prototype does, and build upon it.
THANK YOU
