The Truth beneath the waves

An immersive experience on Climate Change

MAJOR MAJOR

FINAL POTOTYPE:

I build the scene further adding some lighting effects that give a feeling of revelation to the viewer. I built the experience for virtual reality and desktop as well. I believe that the experience in virtual reality is encapsulated as a world in its own, devoid of any outer distraction, giving the user the opportunity to reflect deeply on the experience at the moment.

SCREENSHOTS_FINAL SCENE:

The final experience mainly focuses on the effect of ocean acidification on jellyfishes and the bleaching of coral reefs due to climate change. It also includes other marine creatures like algae, octopuses, crocodile, snail, crab & fishes to reflect upon the importance of existence of these magical sea animals in tandem to maintain the food chain & ecosystem.

Overall, I was content at being able to start a conversation, a thought process that encouraged the youth interacted with to realize their role towards climate change in their own small ways.

I started with the effects of climate change on the nature, and through the process came to carbon footprints. I realised that the term ‘carbon footprint’ and its exact implication on global warming is still a mystery to many people which is when I realised that I wanted to work with the young age group people, who are starting to learn and understand the world around them, so that they could understand and realize how their actions contribute towards climate change which in turn would kill these magical sea creatures.

Through the entire process of research, prototyping and re-iterating on different aspets of climate change, I realised and learnt the importance of narrowing down and scaling to a relatable aspect of the adverse effects of climate change to reach the intended audience and I wish to continue to make a difference towards bringing the change I wish to see in the world around me.

EXHIBITION AT MAJOR MAJOR, 4th May'19

I got some really helpful feedback from the 53 users who play-tested the VR experience at MAJOR MAJOR exhibition. I got the opportunity to speak with people working on ocean and water awareness, on projects highlighting the effects of global warming on the oceans. I am glad to have been able to connect and speak with these people and look forward to taking this initiative and project forward.
